Dairy Intolerance - Expert Advice from Carroll Method NDs

The Carroll Food Intolerance Test results prove I’m dairy intolerant. Allergy testing never revealed dairy as an issue, although I experienced on-going type two allergy reactions. 

 

Carroll Method naturopathic doctors (NDs) provide the best advice – entirely omit dairy from the diet, in any form, and in any quantity. These NDs identify the foods and ingredients that include dairy. You may be surprised by several items on the list.

List of Foods Containing Dairy

My Carroll Method ND’s specific list of foods and ingredients containing dairy:

 

Milk, cream, butter, cheese, yogurt, goat’s milk, buttermilk, kefir, whey, or anything else made from milk, and any food in which any of these are used. Sodium caseinate, calcium caseinate, lactic acid, lactose and any lactylate, caseinate for similar substances are milk derivatives. Many soy cheeses currently contain some milk products. Many dairy-sensitive people will react to lactoferrin, a milk derivative to retard E. Coli growth. Some meat products (for example, hamburger from large processing facilities), pre-packaged raw greens, and frozen fish are now treated with lactoferrin. Organic or free-range meats are not treated with lactoferrin.

Dairy Intolerance - My Pro Tips

If I drink milk (by mistake) it upsets my stomach. I have thrown up. Eating dairy is a little better, my stomach rolls and I get gassy. The next day, I get pimples and constipation. If I eat packaged meat, i.e., hamburger washed with lactoferrin, I get constipated. My son experiences acne breakouts the next day. Dairy combined with sugar, grease, or alcohol is even worse. It is just not worth it for us.

 

Here are my Gut Do’s and Don’ts:

Gut Do’s

  • Use organic and unsweetened plant milks.
  • Make homemade nut and oat milks.
  • Enjoy sugar free plant-based yogurts. I love Kite’s Greek vegan yogurt, 17 grams of protein/serving.
  • Enjoy homemade ice creams. Simply blend frozen fruits, yogurt, and collagen powder.
  • Be use chocolate is dairy, the darker the better.  
  • Replace butter with grass-fed lard or raw coconut butter.
  • Great high heat oils are avocado and coconut.
  • Use broth instead of butter, i.e., steam veggies or to make gravy.

Gut Don’ts

  • Do not use lactose-free dairy products, i.e., milk, ice cream, and ghee.
  • Don’t consume packaged foods washed with lactoferrin, i.e., hamburger and processed meats
  • Do not eat casseroles, salads, soups, gravies, processed potato chips and snack foods, containing dairy, i.e., coleslaw and potato salad.
  • Don’t eat dairy and sugar together.
  • Don’t drink dairy and alcohol together.
  • Be aware of combining avocado, coconut oil with sugar if, like me, you are intolerant to the combo of fruit and sugar.

I recommend splurging on a frother. I love almond milk froth for my coffee and hot chocolate drinks. We take the frother camping. The brand Silk Milk has a creamy, unsweetened, almond version that makes great non-dairy froth.

 

Alcohol and Dairy Intolerance

Alcohol drinks made with dairy is not a good mix for the dairy intolerant. It drains all my energy and upsets my stomach. Most of these drinks contain sugar. Dairy and sugar is already bad combination for the dairy intolerant. Adding alcohol always makes food intolerance symptoms worse.

Dairy Intolerance - Simple Test

Here is my simple test. If consuming anything on the dairy list results in symptoms, you may be dairy intolerant. Do a test, eat dairy on an empty stomach. Be aware of immediate reactions, i.e., bloating, gas, reddening of facial skin, or lower energy. Simply eliminate dairy or for a thorough test, get the Carroll Food Intolerance Method.
